Emily Fox, PT, DPT, PhD
Clinical Research Scientist
Emily Fox, PT, DPT, PhD is a Clinical Research Scientist and Director of Neuromuscular Research at Brooks. She also is the Director of the Brooks Motion Analysis Center and a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Florida. She is a leading member of the Brooks-UF PHHP Research Collaboration. Dr. Fox is a physical therapist with expertise in motor control and neurologic rehabilitation. Her research program focuses on walking and breathing function, and development of innovative approaches to advance rehabilitation and recovery. She serves on the Steering Committee for the UF Breathing Research and Therapeutics Center and the Editorial Board for the Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy, a leading publication of the American Physical Therapy Association. Her research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, the Veteran’s Administration, and the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation.
She is particularly interested in rehabilitation strategies that promote neuroplasticity and motor recovery, including adjuvant approaches that may augment rehabilitation outcomes. Dr. Fox’s current research is focused on recovery of respiratory and walking function. Specifically, she is investigating the use of intramuscular diaphragm stimulation to promote independent respiration and the use of therapeutic intermittent hypoxia to improve respiratory and trunk motor function after spinal cord injury. Additionally, Dr. Fox is investigating the use of activity-based walking interventions, including the use of advanced robotics. Her walking research program also focuses on understanding the effects of neurologic injury on walking control and walking tasks necessary for community mobility.
