Video Transcript
Hi, my name is Jacyln Jefferson, and I am a physical therapist here at Brooks Rehabilitation.
Today, we are going to discuss fall prevention. Falls are a major threat to the health and independence of older adults.
Each year, one in three older adults age 65 and older experiences a fall. And once a person falls, they are two to three times more likely to fall again. Falls can be devastating. Falls are the leading cause of non-fatal injury among older adults.
One out of 10 falls causes serious injury, such as a hip fracture or head injury, which requires hospitalization. Falls are preventable. People are living longer and falls will increase unless we make a serious commitment to providing effective fall prevention programs.
Fortunately, the opportunity to help prevent falls among older adults has never been better, as research has demonstrated that falls can be prevented. All older adults should be encouraged to seek an individual fall risk assessment from their healthcare provider, especially older adults with a history of falls and/or with balance or mobility problems.
If you or a family member is holding onto walls, furniture, or someone else while walking, it may be time to see a physical therapist.
We will be adding more videos on fall prevention tips, what to do if you do have a fall, and exercises to help prevent your risk of falling.
