A growing population and a shortage of hospital beds in Jacksonville, Fl., was the catalyst for J. Brooks Brown, MD, and fellow physicians to construct Memorial Hospital in 1969. It opens with 99 beds, and Dr. Brown serves as Chairman of the Board.

Cathedral Rehabilitation Hospital celebrates its grand opening in Jacksonville, Fla.
September
Dr. Brown oversees Memorial’s acquisition of bed licenses from Cathedral Rehabilitation, establishing the area’s only hospital-based rehabilitation facility - Memorial Regional Rehabilitation Center.

The organization moves to the renovated north wing of the new Memorial Medical facility.
June
The first rehabilitation outpatient center is established within Memorial Healthcare Plaza.
May
Memorial Rehabilitation Center becomes Memorial Rehabilitation Hospital and celebrations occur commemorating the opening of a freestanding, independent rehabilitation hospital.

Memorial Hospital is sold to HCA. The rehabilitation hospital is not part of the sale and is renamed Genesis Rehabilitation Hospital.
The building that houses the College of Health at the University of North Florida is named J. Brooks Brown Hall in honor of Dr. Brown's contributions to healthcare in Jacksonville.

Genesis Rehabilitation is renamed Brooks Rehabilitation as a tribute to founder J. Brooks Brown, MD.

Researchers from the University of Florida College of Public Health & Health Professions begin to conduct research at Brooks.
March
Brooks Rehabilitation donates $3.6 million to the College of Health at the University of North Florida. This gift, combined with a 1996 gift, results in the naming of the College as the "Brooks College of Health".

Brooks implements the Programmatic Model – brain injury, stroke recovery, spinal cord injury, orthopedics and pediatrics.
The Brooks Residency and Fellowship Program is implemented.

Brooks begins offering home health as a service with the acquisition of Home Care Advantage.

The Brooks Administration building opens, the first certified green building on a healthcare campus in Northeast Florida.

Groundbreaking for the 115-acre Bartram Campus occurs.
Summer
The Bartram Park campus opens, adding additional service lines to the system of care with a Skilled Nursing Facility (Bartram Crossing), an assisted living facility (Bartram Lakes) and two Green House® 12-bed memory care homes.

Halifax Health | Brooks Rehabilitation - Center for Inpatient Rehabilitation, located within Halifax Health – Medical Center of Daytona Beach opens with 40 beds offering a full continuum of rehabilitation services.
Brooks - University of Florida College of Public Health & Health Professions Research Collaboration establish a formal partnership.

The groundbreaking for University Crossing, a three-story, 111-bed skilled nursing facility occurs.

The College of Health Sciences at Jacksonville University is named the Brooks Rehabilitation College of Healthcare Sciences in honor of the largest single gift in the history of the College and in gratitude for Brooks Rehabilitation's ongoing support totaling $4 million over several years.

Helen’s House, patient and family housing, opens in memory of Helen Brown, wife of J. Brooks Brown, MD.

In January, Brooks Rehabilitation mourns the passing of founder J. Brooks Brown at age 97.
