Welcome to Brooks Rehabilitation pelvic health education series on constipation.
In this video, I’ll be discussing general hydration and nutrition guidelines as they pertain to constipation. If you are constipated, it’s very important that you stay hydrated.
The current technical recommendation for fluid intake is 48 to 64 ounces of fluid or 1.2 liters with at least half of that fluid intake being from pure water. A more practical guideline might be to try and make sure that your urine is a pale straw color consistently throughout the day. 25 to 35 grams is the current daily fiber recommendation.
If that’s more than your normal intake of fiber, you wanna try to build to that amount slowly and gradually.
You also wanna try and chew your food thoroughly and slowly. You wanna have more smaller meals, avoid large meals, and try to time your meals consistently throughout the day.
