Electrical Stimulation

Electrical stimulation can be used in several ways in rehabilitation. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) can help reduce pain by using a low voltage current across the skin to block pain signals. Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) uses the electricity to stimulate muscle contraction, which can help rebuild a muscle after a surgery or trauma that has affected the muscle or the nerve. Both of these treatments can be completed in the clinic as part of the rehabilitation process, or can be performed at home with a home unit that your therapist can help you get through your insurance.
