While patients are waiting for a transplant, they can experience a loss of strength, mobility and function. After transplant surgery is complete, it is important for patients to receive therapy at a post-acute rehabilitation hospital to re-engage their muscles, build cardiovascular endurance and muscle strength in a care setting that has 24/7 physician and medical staff oversight.

What to expect during transplant rehabilitation

Transplant patients will receive a variety of therapy and medical care, depending on their unique situation and type of transplant. Our therapy services are available 7-days a week, so when patients are away from our facility for medical appointments, they still receive up to 3 hours of therapy, 5 times a week.

Offsite appointments and transportation

Lab testing and monitoring are important during recovery. Transportation arrangements are available for patients needing to visit their transplant care team periodically during rehabilitation.

Recovery milestones for transplant patients

Patients and caregivers can expect approximately two weeks of care in an inpatient rehabilitation hospital, depending on the severity of rehabilitation needs. Therapy is tailored to the patient’s tolerance level. Recovery goals are focused around the patient’s interests and accomplishing every day tasks such as dressing, walking, eating, hygiene, hobbies and interests, as well as building endurance and muscle strength.

Our care team will work with the patient and family to determine the appropriate next level of care before leaving our inpatient hospitals. Brooks is equipped to provide a continuum of care at each milestone.

Ongoing rehabilitation after discharge

When a patient discharges from our inpatient hospitals, therapy and medical care may still be necessary and can continue through our home health care services or occasionally at our skilled nursing facilities. If the patient is not home bound, therapy can continue at one of our outpatient clinics.
