How we help

Referral for implantation

Our expert physical medicine and rehabilitation doctors have the ability to help ischemic stroke survivors obtain the referral needed for implantation of the Vivistim vagus nerve stimulation device.  Brooks partners with local, regional and national healthcare systems to implant the device post stroke. After the implantation is completed by a surgeon, stroke patients should return to our outpatient rehabilitation clinics for continued paired occupational therapy with the device.

Paired outpatient therapy

After implantation, our highly knowledgeable therapists are trained to provide the necessary paired outpatient therapy to increase hand and arm mobility. Find your nearest outpatient clinic here.

About the Vivistim VNS device

Learn more about the device, what it looks like and who is eligible for implantation below.

What is the Vivistim Paired VNS System?

Vivistim is a FDA-approved stimulation device that supports the improvement of arm and hand mobility in chronic ischemic stroke survivors. The device fits in the palm of the hand and is surgically implanted.

small silver square transponder

The device is activated during therapy or when practicing rehabilitation exercises at home. When activated a mild electrical pulse is sent to the vagus nerve in the neck. Most do not feel the pulse, but if you do, it may feel like a light tickle.

The stimulation helps build back neuroplasticity, strengthening of the neural pathways between the brain and the body, in order to bypass the area damaged by the stroke. When paired with the necessary rehabilitation therapy in the targeted areas, patients can experience increased arm and hand movement over time.

diagram of the implanted transponder shows that the transponder is implanted at the shoulder area and that a cord runs up to attach to the vagus nerve that leads to the brain.

Individuals who are 6-months or more post ischemic stroke with moderate to severe arm impairment and have been actively participating in continued outpatient rehabilitation.

If you are an ischemic stroke survivor and can answer yes to any of the following questions, Vivistim might be right for you:

  • Do you currently have any hand movement?
  • Did you have rehabilitation therapy after a stroke?
  • Did you not recover the amount of hand and arm movement you had hoped for?
  • Has your recovery slowed down or plateaued?
  • Do you still need help with activities of daily life?

Implantation

Surgical implantation of the VNS devices is a same day outpatient procedure.

Recovery period

Patients should expect between five to 14 days of recovery before starting in-clinic therapy.

Outpatient occupational therapy

Once recovery is complete, patients start 6-weeks of therapy at their closest Brooks outpatient clinic with a trained therapist.

Use at home

Continue ongoing therapy by activating the VNS device with a magnet swipe to use while practicing rehabilitation exercises at home.
