VIDEO: Types and Causes of Stroke

Hi, I’m Dr. List, and I am a physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor. I am the medical director for the Stroke Program here at Brooks. I’m also the medical lead for the Spasticity Management Program.

When we talk about types of stroke or causes of stroke, there are two main types of stroke.

An ischemic stroke and a hemorrhagic stroke. An ischemic stroke is where we lose blood flow to an area of the brain and it causes damage to that area. A hemorrhagic stroke is where we actually have bleeding into an area of the brain.

And so we’re dealing with the repercussions of too much blood in the area. Or with each of the strokes, we’re trying to develop a recovery plan that is specific to the stroke recovery that you’re going through.
