Kyle was involved in a motorcycle accident in 2017, and due to ongoing issues with his leg, he opted for amputation and a skin graft in 2022. He uses both a prosthetic limb and a wheelchair, depending on the activity and duration, as excessive time on the prosthetic can negatively affect his skin graft. When he first went home, Kyle’s most significant challenges included pain management, physical strength, self-care, adjusting to a new identity, dealing with public perception, isolation, loss of friends and community and navigating assumptions about his life. He utilized physical therapy, mental health counseling, community support programs and Adaptive Sports and Recreation to cope. Kyle now plays on the Brooks Ballers wheelchair basketball team.
