Candy experienced a brain stem stroke in 2010 at the age of 41. Immediately following the stroke, she had difficulty with speech and swallowing, but she has since fully recovered these skills. However, she finds it hard to read now. Candy uses a cane for assistance while walking. One of her most significant challenges was using a wheelchair upon her initial return home, as her house was inaccessible and her chair did not fit through doorways. She has participated in Adaptive Sports and Recreation and the resources at the Neuro Recovery Center.
