Joe’s son, Michael, was injured in a car accident at the age of 24, spending a month and a half in a coma and persistent vegetative state with multiple additional injuries. Joe’s biggest challenge was helping Michael adjust to activities of daily living (ADLs). After his release from Heartland South, Michael continued intensive occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), and speech/cognitive therapies. At the same time, the family utilized home health, outpatient care, TBI day treatment, the Neuro Recovery Center, The Clubhouse, and Adaptive Sports and Recreation. Joe and his wife held Michael’s legal guardianship for seven years post-injury. Still, Michael has since regained his guardianship and is now driving independently.
