At the age of 24, Michael was injured in a car accident, spending a month and a half in a coma and persistent vegetative state, with multiple additional injuries. One of his biggest challenges after returning home was adjusting to daily life from a wheelchair and needing assistance with almost everything. Post-release from Heartland South, Michael continued with intensive occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), and speech/cognitive therapies. He also utilized home health, outpatient care, TBI day treatment, the Neuro Recovery Center, the Clubhouse and Adaptive Sports and Recreation. Michael has since regained his guardianship and now drives independently. He is currently responsible for writing the Brooks Clubhouse newsletter. However, he continues to manage short-term memory issues and a speech impediment.
