Sensory Processing Difficulties

Sensory processing refers to the ability to register, interpret, and respond to different types of information taken in through our senses.

We take in sensory information from our environment through different senses including our vestibular system, proprioceptive system, tactile system, visual system, auditory system, gustatory system, olfactory system, and interoceptive system. A sensory processing difficulty affects our ability to recognize, organize, and attach meaning to sensory information. Individuals with a sensory processing difficulty can over-respond to certain stimuli (making them sensitive) or under-respond to stimuli (making them less aware/unaware). A sensory processing difficulty can result from an injury or illness or can be associated with certain developmental delays.
